Rob Roy's Grave at Balquhidder

Rob Roy MacGregor is buried at the Old Parish Church in Balquhidder, alongside his wife Mary and two of their four sons, Coll and Robin. Three side-by-side slabs within iron railings mark the graves, the centre stone carved with the motto “MacGregor Despite Them.” The slabs are older stones, probably re-used; the railings, which name Rob Roy, Mary, Coll and Robin, were added in 1890.1

Footnotes

  1. Peter Lawrie, “Rob Roy is buried at Balquhidder”, Glen Discovery. The 1890 railings record the four names; the body of the same account once slips and calls the second son Ranald, but the railings and the wider record give Robin (Robert Oig). ↩︎
