Departures from Glen Discovery
The tree is built from Peter Lawrie's compilation at Glen Discovery, and most of it is his. This page lists every place where the site has deliberately moved away from that baseline, so that a reader can tell the keeper's judgement from Lawrie's. Each entry gives the reason and the source. The list is short and will grow as the research does. About this genealogy explains how the layers fit together.
Records merged
Glen Discovery sometimes carries a wife twice: once as a person in her own line, and again as a spouse record on her husband's page. Where the two are plainly the same woman, the tree keeps the record that carries her own descent and moves the marriage onto it.
- Mary MacGregor of Comar, wife of Rob Roy. The spouse record on page 93 and elsewhere is merged into Mary, born about 1676, of the Comer line, whose own record now carries the marriage.1
- Margaret of Coileitir, wife of Coll. The spouse record on page 93 and elsewhere is merged into Margaret, born about 1703, of Coileitir in Glen Falloch, whose own record now carries the December 1721 marriage.1
Links detached
- The McIver marriage of Gregor, son of Coll. Glen Discovery gives Gregor, son of Coll, the Killin marriage of Grigor McGrigor and Katharen McIver. Lawrie's own note 1 on page 93 observes that this Grigor was having children from 1729 and “could not have been the son of Coll and Margaret who married in 1721”. The Coll page follows the note rather than the chart: the marriage is not drawn there, while Gregor's sons Donald, Duncan and Gregor stay beneath him, faded, because the baseline draws them there and the Canadian branches hang from them.2 The tree leaves the whole branch out, as the next section explains. The Coll page sets out the problem in full.
Records reread
- The Balquhidder baptism of 23 May 1735. The Glen Discovery data attached this entry (331/10/63) to Gregor, son of Coll, as his birth. ScotlandsPeople indexes it as an unnamed son, but the register image reads “Anna”, and the tree gives the baptism to Anna, Coll's third recorded child. Gregor's birth year of about 1722 is Lawrie's own assumption on page 93, note 10, and the tree marks it as such.3
Branches left out of the tree
Where Lawrie's own notes undercut the attachment of a whole branch, the tree leaves the branch out rather than drawing it faded. The branch pages and the branches map still carry it, faded, so nothing is lost for the record. These attachments are unproven, not disproven: no record contradicts them, but none supports them either.
- Gregor, son of Coll, and his descendants. Gregor rests on a single undated paper in the John MacGregor Collection, and his sons are matched to Killin baptisms that Lawrie himself doubts. The whole branch, including the Caledon and Elgin emigrants, is left out of the tree. The Coll page explains.
- Dougal Ban McGregor alias Murray. Glen Discovery draws him in two places, as a son of Gregor alias John on page 105 and as a son of Duncan Ardmacmuin on page 107, and hedges both. Both attachments are left out of the tree. The Dougal Murray page explains.
Additions
- The chiefly succession. The red connector in the tree follows the site's own list of the chieftains of Clann Dubhgall Cheire, I to XII, set out on the chieftaincy line page in the notebook. Glen Discovery does not mark the succession as such.
- Notes. The speech-bubble notes on individual cards are the keeper's, and say where a date is an assumption, where a record has been reread, or where a question is still open.
- Local additions. The green-tinted cards are people who are not in Glen Discovery: a few spouses whom the baseline names only in a marriage line, and the keeper's own recent generations, who appear by name only where they may still be living.

Peter Lawrie, The Genealogy of Clan Gregor 93 - descendants of Gregor, son of Coll, Glen Discovery, notes 1 and 10. Note 1 lists the Killin baptisms to Grigor McGrigor and Katharine McIver - Patrick 1729, Malcolm 1734, Duncan and Donald 1742, Grigor 1745 - and draws the conclusion quoted above. Note 10: “I can't find an OPR record of the birth of Gregor, so have assumed a firstborn, 1722 after 1721 marriage, so that he could have Donald in 1740-46 and marry in 1764. That makes the ages correct, but it is suspicious.” ↩︎
