Dubhgall ciar is the eponym of Clann Dubhgall Cheire (Clandoulkeir), and the head of the line as it appears on this site. He is first recorded by 1488.1 The line first appears on record by branch-name in 1533, when his grandsons Gille-Coluim, Donnchadh and Pàdraig - sons of Donnchadh I in Glengyle - were put to the horn for theft together with other MacGregors.2 Several of his sons and their immediate male issue appear in a bond of manrent to John Campbell of Glenurquhay in 1547, the patronymic chain in that record being one of the earliest documentary anchors for the brotherhood.3 Raibart mòr's line at Strathyre is the source of the Buchanan branch noted by Amelia MacGregor.4
