Research notes

His father is not proved

His birth entry of 1876 leaves the father’s column blank and marks him illegitimate. In May 1876 the Aberfoyle kirk session recorded his mother’s confession, and that the act had been committed in the parish of Drymen.

DNA analysed by Finding Families in 2024 points to a son of John Robertson (1801 to 1877) and Catherine Campbell as his father. That couple had three sons. James, born 1846, died in 1870. Peter, born 1848, and Alexander Coulter Robertson, born 1851, are both documented at Ward Toll, Gartmore, in the parish of Drymen, Peter in 1879 and Alexander Coulter in 1881.

On their addresses alone, nothing separates Alexander Coulter from his brother Peter. Three points favour Alexander Coulter. The boy was himself named Alexander, and an illegitimate son whose father was known was often given his father’s name. Alexander Coulter is also documented at Killearn, next to the southern end of Drymen parish, in November 1876 and February 1877. And the Aberfoyle clerk wrote to the session of Drymen, not to the session of Gartmore, which had its own session from 1870 and is where Peter’s only documented address lies. That is an argument, not a proof.

Alexander Coulter Robertson is entered as his father as a reasonable assumption that is not proved, rated Probable. His mother’s link is Proved.

His names

He was registered as Alexander McGregor and appears under that name in the censuses of 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911. By 1919 he signed as Alexander Robertson. See the family with Margaret Gillies for why the two are taken to be one man.
