Research notes

Her names

Born Catherine McGregor. From her marriage to George Clark in 1899 she was Catherine Clark, and the asylum records call her Catherine McGregor or Clark. The 1911 census spells the name Clarke, and the 1921 census gives Catherine McG. Clark.

Her birth

No birth or baptism entry has been found. The ages in the censuses of 1861, 1871 and 1881 put her birth between April 1851 and April 1852. Her parents’ names were entered for proclamation at Aberfoyle on 30 August 1851, so she was born about the time of their marriage. The records from 1899 to her death in 1922 point to 1851. The 1911 census gives her age as 68, about nine years too many, and is taken to be an error in that return.

The 1861 census gives her birthplace as Balquhidder, her father’s parish. The censuses of 1871, 1891, 1901 and 1921 give Aberfoyle, and 1881 gives Perthshire. Lawrie’s genealogy (page 106) records that in 1852 the Balquhidder kirk session dealt with Duncan of Cuilearn and his wife for antenuptial fornication, and places the case under her parents. The birth was entered at Balquhidder on that basis.

That basis is weaker than it looked (checked 11 September 2026). A second Duncan McGregor lived at Cuilearn: the husband of her father’s sister Janet. Duncan McGregor and Janet McGregor are entered in the Balquhidder marriage register on 9 November 1850 (331/30 110, index only), and on census night, 30 March 1851, they were at Cullearn with a daughter Catharine aged three months (Census 1851, Balquhidder, enumeration district 3, page 18, Ancestry transcription). A child born within about two months of that entry fits a case of antenuptial fornication at least as well as Catherine does. Until the 1852 minute is read, it does not place Catherine’s birth in Balquhidder, and Aberfoyle is equally possible.

Her life

She worked as a servant in Aberfoyle and Port of Menteith. Her son Alexander was born in January 1876, and in May she appeared before the kirk session of Aberfoyle, which recorded that the act had been committed in the parish of Drymen. She was admitted to church privileges in May 1877. In November 1899, aged 48 and a cook at the manse of Shettleston, she married George Clark, a widowed ploughman.

In April 1903, aged 52, she was certified insane at her home, 21 Laird Street, Coatbridge, and taken to Lanark District Asylum at Hartwood by her husband and the inspector of poor’s assistant. She was moved to the lunatic wards of Old Monkland Poorhouse in February 1915, and back to Hartwood in September 1916, when her husband’s address was given as unknown. She died at Hartwood on 21 May 1922, of tuberculosis of the kidney and heart disease, and was buried in lair 339 of the Hartwood paupers’ cemetery on 24 May.

Her other children

She also had a daughter, Mary McLaren, born in 1879, who lived with Duncan and Margaret McGregor and was the informant at Duncan’s death in 1902.
