Cuilearn, 1 house. The surname of Janet and Alexander is written Do.

Duncan McGregor, 20, Mason, born in the county.

Janet McGregor, 20, born in the county.

Alexr McGregor, 14, born in the county.

No one else is in the household. It is the last entry on page 5.

The 1841 census rounded adult ages down to a multiple of five and did not record relationships. The three fit Duncan (baptised 1817, so 24 and entered as 20), Janet (born 1820) and Alexander (born 1827), children of Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane. Lawrie places the family’s baptisms at Cuilearn from 1818, and the 1851 census transcription gives the farm as “Cullearn” (Balquhidder, enumeration district 3, page 18).

Reading note, 11 September 2026. The image agrees with Ancestry’s transcription and with the ScotlandsPeople index in names, ages, occupation and page. The farm is written Cuilearn; Ancestry transcribes it as Cuilcam.

Reading note, 11 September 2026. The image settles the points left open by the indexes. The birthplace is Perth, Balquhidder, which Ancestry transcribes as Reilginddel, Perth. The age is 30, as Ancestry has it; the ScotlandsPeople index gives 4, a misreading, so an age-limited search of that index does not find him. The condition, which Ancestry’s index does not give, is unmarried, as it should be five months before his marriage. The surname is McGregor; Ancestry’s McGregore reads the final flourish as a letter.

Research notes

His birth and parents

He was baptised at Balquhidder on 1 April 1817, son of Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane, at Tullich. His death entry of 1902, aged 85, names his parents as Duncan MacGregor, mason, and Catherine MacGregor M.S. MacFarlane, and the censuses give his birthplace as Balquhidder. His father is identified with the Duncan baptised at Inverlochlarigmore in 1789; that identification is rated Probable, for the reasons given on the family of Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane.

In short: the records prove his parents’ names and that he grew up in their household at Tullich and Cuilearn, so his link to his mother is Proved. What no record yet shows is which Duncan McGregor his father was. The tree follows Lawrie in taking him to be the Duncan of 1789, son of Duncan McGrigor and Janet McGrigor of Inverlochlarigmore, and through them a descendant of Rob Roy. The naming of the first four children after the four grandparents Lawrie gives supports it. But Lawrie gives no source, and two other Duncans baptised in the parish in 1788 have not been traced or excluded, so his link to his father stays Probable.

His wife’s parents were also named Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane. They are taken to be a different couple. Her father was a shepherd at Culligart in Aberfoyle in 1830 and gave his birthplace as Callander in 1851. His father was a mason, according to his death entry, and was at Tullich in Balquhidder in 1817.

His whereabouts

He was a mason all his working life, and a dyke builder at Ledard when the banns were entered in 1851.

In 1841 he was at Cuilearn in Balquhidder, the farm where Lawrie places the baptisms of his younger brothers and sisters from 1818: Duncan McGregor, 20, mason, with Janet McGregor, 20, and Alexander McGregor, 14, and no one else in the household (Census 1841, Balquhidder 331, enumeration district 3, page 5). The ages fit him (24, entered as 20 under the 1841 rule), his sister Janet (born 1820) and his brother Alexander (born 1827). Neither parent was in the household.

In 1851 he was working at Ledard, on Loch Ard in Aberfoyle parish. On census night, 30 March, Duncan McGregor, unmarried, 30, mason, born Perth, Balquhidder, was a servant in the household of John Graham, wright, at Ledard (Census 1851, Aberfoyle 325, enumeration district 4, page 2, schedule 4, enumeration book image read). Ancestry’s transcription reads the birthplace as Reilginddel, and the ScotlandsPeople index reads the age as 4, which is why neither index found him easily. Five months later the banns name the groom as Duncan McGregor, dyke builder at Ledard. His bride, Margaret McGregor, was on the same census two pages further on, in her father’s household at Blaruskan. The age is three or four years short, as it is four years short in 1871. He was not in his sister Janet’s household at Cullearn that night.

In 1871 a Duncan McGregor, 50, mason, born Balquhidder, was lodging at Farkin, Arrochar, while Margaret and the children were at home in Aberfoyle. The age is four years short, but the trade and birthplace fit, and he is taken to be this man.

According to Lawrie’s genealogy (page 106), the Balquhidder kirk session dealt in 1851 with Mary at Cuilearn for fornication with Duncan at Cuilearn, in 1852 with Duncan at Cuilearn for fornication with Mary, and in 1852 with Duncan of Cuilearn and his wife for antenuptial fornication. Lawrie places all three under this Duncan. But his sister Janet’s husband, another Duncan McGregor, also lived at Cuilearn: they are entered in the Balquhidder marriage register on 9 November 1850 (331/30 110, index only), and on 30 March 1851 they were at Cullearn with a daughter aged three months (Census 1851, Balquhidder, enumeration district 3, page 18). The antenuptial case fits that couple at least as well. The case of Mary, as Lawrie describes it, is fornication rather than adultery, which points to an unmarried man and fits this Duncan in 1851 better than his brother-in-law; the 1851 census gives him as unmarried. On census night in 1851, however, this Duncan was at Ledard in Aberfoyle, where he was working, and not at Cuilearn. None of the minutes has been read; they are bound in OPR 331/3.

On the Aberfoyle communion roll of July 1877 he and his wife are listed at Bulburn. A faint line runs through his name, which may be a later deletion. By 1881 they were at Arntamie, in Port of Menteith.

His death

He died at Craiguchty, Aberfoyle, on 5 August 1902, of carcinoma of the bladder. The date of 7 August sometimes given is the date of registration.

Another family

He may also have had a daughter, Elizabeth, born about 1851, by Mary McGregor. Lawrie describes Mary as of Dalmellington and his cousin, and the evidence report of 7 September 2026 as the daughter of his uncle Donald. This family has not yet been worked through.
