[1813] April 29. Duncan McGrigor in the Parish of Balquhidder & Cathrine McFarlane in this Parish.
This is the bride’s parish entry for the couple contracted at Balquhidder on 30 May 1813 (331/20 388). It gives the groom’s parish only, with no farm, designation or witnesses, so it does not help to identify which Duncan McGregor of Balquhidder he was.

No name follows “named”. A hole in the paper takes out part of “baptized”. The farm at the end of the first line is read as Culearn; its last letters could also be read as m. Tulloch is the Tullich of the baptism of their son Duncan in 1817. The note in the right margin of the page is a different entry (John McLaren and Jacobina Allison, 1823).

Cause of death: Chronic Pneumonia, as cert. by D. Steele Moon [reading uncertain] L.R.C.P.
Informant: Ewen M. MacGregor, Son, Present.
Registered 1889, April 15th, at Dundee.
What it shows. The Alexander baptised at Cuilearn, Balquhidder, on 6 May 1827 to Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane used the name Alexander Murray MacGregor in life, and passed the initial M to his son Ewen. This is the first record that carries the Murray which Lawrie attaches to his name; the baptism has Alexander only. The father is called a crofter here and a mason on the 1902 death entry of his brother Duncan. The entry names the parents but not the grandparents, so it does not tie the father to the baptism of 1789.

General Register Office for ScotlandCensus 1841, Balquhidder, 331 ED 3 page 5, Cuilearn, household of Duncan McGregor, mason, with Janet and Alexander McGregor (enumeration book image read)
Transcript and reading notes
Census of Scotland, 1841, enumeration book 331 3, page 5. Parish of Balquhidder. Transcribed from the enumeration book image (ScotlandsPeople, 1841 census 331/ 3/ 5). The image shows pages 5 and 6 of the book.
Cuilearn, 1 house. The surname of Janet and Alexander is written Do.
Duncan McGregor, 20, Mason, born in the county.
Janet McGregor, 20, born in the county.
Alexr McGregor, 14, born in the county.
No one else is in the household. It is the last entry on page 5.
The 1841 census rounded adult ages down to a multiple of five and did not record relationships. The three fit Duncan (baptised 1817, so 24 and entered as 20), Janet (born 1820) and Alexander (born 1827), children of Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane. Lawrie places the family’s baptisms at Cuilearn from 1818, and the 1851 census transcription gives the farm as “Cullearn” (Balquhidder, enumeration district 3, page 18).
Reading note, 11 September 2026. The image agrees with Ancestry’s transcription and with the ScotlandsPeople index in names, ages, occupation and page. The farm is written Cuilearn; Ancestry transcribes it as Cuilcam.

Research notes
His identity
He is the Duncan baptised at Inverlochlarigmore on 6 November 1789, the youngest known child of Duncan McGrigor and Janet McGrigor. The tree takes him to be the Duncan McGregor who was contracted to Katrine McFarlane at Balquhidder in 1813 and whose son Duncan was baptised at Tullich in 1817. That identification comes from Lawrie’s genealogy and is rated Probable on the family with Catharine McFarlane, where the reasons are set out.
What it rests on. No record read so far ties the groom of 1813, or the father of the children from 1817 to 1827, to the baptism of 1789; the baptisms name only the parents and the farm. In favour: the first four named children, Duncan, Peter, Janet and Catherine, carry the names of the four grandparents Lawrie gives, and of the twelve Duncan McGregors baptised at Balquhidder from 1775 to 1800, only the Duncan of 1789 had a father Duncan and a mother Janet. Against certainty: four Duncans were baptised in the parish within thirteen months of November 1789, and while two have been traced to other lives, the sons of Duncan McGregor and Isabel Ferguson (1788) and of Patrick McGregor and a McMillan mother (1788) have not. The link would become Strong if those two were excluded, and Proved if a record named the father’s own parents, such as the Balquhidder kirk session minute of 1813.
His mother
The tree takes his mother to be Janet Drummond, baptised at Immervoulin in 1748, daughter of Duncan Drummond and Kate Col, and so a great-granddaughter of Rob Roy. The link is rated Probable, and it is the least certain step in the line from Rob Roy to this family.
The baptism of 1789 names his mother only as Janet McGrigor, and the marriage contract of 1770 names the bride only as Janet McGrigor, both in the parish. No record says that she was born a Drummond or names her parents. The identification was proposed by the keeper and accepted by Lawrie, so Lawrie’s agreement adds no independent weight. In its favour: the two families lived a few miles apart in Balquhidder, the family tradition of 1880 says one of Kate Col’s daughters was well married in the home district, and small DNA matches through Kate Col’s other children are consistent with it. Against it: four other Janets with MacGregor aliases were baptised at Balquhidder from 1745 to 1749 and their marriages are unknown. The kirk session minutes for December 1770, or a death entry after 1855 for one of his brothers and sisters giving their mother’s maiden name, could settle it.
His life
The Balquhidder baptism index lists the children of Duncan McGregor and Catharine McFarlane as Duncan 1817 (at Tullich), Peter 1818, Janet 1820, a child not named 1823, a child not named 1825 and Alexander 1827. The entries of 1823, 1825 and 1827 were read as images on 11 September 2026. All three give the family at Culearn, and the entry of 1823 adds “late in Tulloch”, which ties the Cuilearn family to the couple at Tullich in 1817. In 1825 the clerk left the mother’s name and the child’s name blank. The child of 1827 is entered as Alexander only; Lawrie calls him Alexander Murray. The evidence report of 7 Sep 2026 says Peter went to Australia in 1852. A testament of 1835 for a Duncan McGregor, tenant in Tulloch, was checked for the evidence report and belongs to another, childless man.
In the 1841 census three of the children, Duncan, Janet and Alexander, were living alone at Cuilearn, and neither parent was with them.
His death
No record of his death has been found. Balquhidder kept no register of deaths. Lawrie gives his death as before 1851, without a source. The two statutory death entries that were open, a Duncan McGregor who died in Kilmadock in 1868 aged 75 and one who died in Port of Menteith in 1877 aged 85, were read on 12 September 2026 and are other men. So if he lived past 1855 he did not die in Perthshire under a McGregor spelling at a plausible age, and a death before 1855 is the likeliest reading. A Duncan McGregor of about his age who lived at Auchtoo in Balquhidder from 1841 to 1861 has since been identified as the son of Dugall McGregor and Janet McKay, baptised in 1790.
